Ask Marilyn ® by Marilyn vos Savant is a column in Parade Magazine, published by PARADE, 711 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017, USA. According to Parade, Marilyn vos Savant is listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records Hall of Fame" for "Highest IQ."

In her Parade Magazine column of August 10, 1997, Marilyn reported that 1% of the metal in a typical PC weighing 20 to 25 pounds is gold. She then concludes that a typical personal computer contains 0.01 ounces of gold.

Sorry, Marilyn

Charlie Kluepfel <ChasKlu@aol.com>, wrote to point out that Marilyn's numbers don't add up. If 1% of the metal amounts to only .01 ounce, that means there is only 1 ounce of metal. Certainly a PC weighing between 20 and 25 pounds contains more than one ounce of metal, if we include the power supply, the cables, and the disk drive.
